Pearly Penile Papules Treatments are readily available to two forms, but there is much debate as to which treatment is best and most effective. Treatments for Pearly Penile Papules (PPP) generally consist of Surgical and Non-Surgical or "Homeopathic" methods. I will cover both treatment options as well as explain what PPPs are.

Just What Are PPPs?

PPPs generally follow the basic description below:

  • Occur near the head or "crown" of the penis
  • Occurs more often in uncircumcised men
  • They occur in rows much like a string pearls
  • When occurring on the shaft of the penis then known as "Fordyce Spots"
  • Usually occur in men ages 20-30 years of age "Vestibular Papillmatosis

Are PPPs An STD?

When PPPss are first noticed by the sufferer, they are often mistaken for either "genital warts" or genital herpes (HSV-2). To be very clear about this, Pearly Penile Papules are not a sexually transmitted disease and cannot be transmitted to sufferers' sexual partners.

Unlike STDs such as genital warts and genital herpes (HSV-2), pearly penile papules are not usually a painful affliction. Although they can be very unsightly, PPP in and of itself does not cause pain to the suffer. There have been reports of uncomfort or pain during sexual intercourse, but this does not occur very often.

PPP treatments also vary greatly from genital herpes treatments, but some of the surgical treatments closely mirror the treatments of genital warts.

Fordyce Spots Vs PPPs

"Fordyce Spots" are closely related to pearly penile papules and are most people often confuse the two. Fordyce Spots form more often on the shaft of the penis and are thought to be caused by either clogged sebaceous (sweat) glands on the penis or abnormally dilated blood vessels, covered by thickened skin.

They are usually a bit smaller than Fordyce spots, PPP being between 1-3 mm and Fordyce Spots are between 1-5mm in size. The coloring of Fordyce spots can be a different as well, sometimes coming in as a purple color.

Pearly Penile Papules Treatments- Surgical

  • Cryotherapy- Liquid nitrogen is used to freeze the PPPs in the affected area. A small lesion will occur from the freezing, blister, scab and then heal like any normal blister.

  • Excisional Surgery- The bumps and some skin in the affected area is surgically removed and stitches are needed. For obvious reasons, not the most popular pearly penile papules treatment option.

  • Electrodessication with Curettage- More often used to remove benign growths or cancerous skin, the affected area is scraped of the bumps and then the skin is cauterized to stop any bleeding that my occur.

  • Hyfrecator- An alternating current (AC) is used to burn off the papules.

  • Surgical CO2- A CO2 laser the size of a pencil lead is used to burn of the bumps one by one.

All surgical pearly penile papules treatments are performed by a doctor or a dermatologist in a hospital setting. Local anesthesia is used and most surgical treatments are on an out patient basis.

Pearly Penile Papules Treatments- Homeopathic

  • Toothpaste- Applied to affected area and left in anywhere from a few hours to overnight and then the toothpaste is gently scrubbed off.
  • Tea Tree Oil- Applied to the affected area 3-4 times a day for a period of 2-3 weeks
  • Castor Oil- Applied in the same manner as Tea Tree Oil it is also recommended to be applied for a 2-3 week period of time.
