That is a big question and the answer is distorted by a lot of noise about what Reiki can and cannot do! My answer to does Reiki work, which I will explain in detail below, is that Reiki does work as long as you have realistic expectations about what Reiki can and cannot do! First, let us get some of the craziness out of the way. In my research on Reiki I have had the opportunity to interact with a number of Reiki masters and to speak with many people who have received Reiki treatment. Many of the masters with whom I spoke are very reasonable people, who genuinely care about Reiki and who have realistic views on the role of Reiki as a complementary alternative healing art and form of self-realization. These people are excellent ambassadors for this healing art. These are the people who are responsible for the fact that Reiki is moving from the fringes to the mainstream, particularly in the areas of pain management, stress and anxiety treatment, hypertension management, and a number of other treatment areas. On the other hand, I have also come across arrogant, conceited Reiki masters - full of self importance. These people are honestly very difficult to listen to, and impossible to have a debate with. They have the view that they can heal anybody of anything. I suppose it is hard to be modest when you feel you have that power! Any time their treatment doesn't work, they ascribe it to the fact that the patient wasn't open to Reiki - so it's the patient's fault! These are the people who also charge a fortune to pass along their "super-human" powers to others! In my view, these people do the reputation of Reiki irreparable harm! So does Reiki work? As I said earlier, it does work like many other energy healing approaches. There is not a huge body of studies to provide conclusive proof, but the number of studies which positively rate Reiki is growing all the time. The Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine has reported on a number of recent studies which showed positive health benefits from Reiki. In one study on stress and depression, four groups were included. One group received hands-on treatment for six weeks, the second distance treatment by a qualified practitioner, the third and fourth groups received placebo treatment by non-practitioners one in person and one remotely for the same time period. The groups who received real Reiki measured significantly more positive health impacts than those who didn't, even a year after the study. More remarkably, when the groups who received the bogus Reiki were treated with real Reiki after the study they only then showed the same positive results on stress and anxiety levels. Another study showed results supporting Reiki in a study involving treating pain after a major dental procedure, indicating Reiki's benefits in pain management. You can make your own mind up on the does Reiki work question, but I predict that alternative treatments like Reiki will be seen more and more in the mainstream. Because of the excellent connection they create between the healer and the patient, perhaps their biggest contribution will be that they bring the heart back into medical care! |
