The day to day grind and to be sure life's major challenges and crises can all do a great job of interrupting or totally breaking the flow of positive mood or "psyched up" energy in the mind. The result tends to be prolonged stagnation and listlessness. The purpose of this article is to describe how the mind can be trained to overcome obstacles and retain the ability to get into a very positive, high energy state which will then help the person do any task or work before them. The power of simple or distinctive methods and techniques should never be overlooked or under-estimated. We go through life increasingly pressured to do every kind and type of activity and yet, for all this activity, things seem to get harder or more difficult to go through. The reason for this? Lack of mental preparation - and specifically, lack of mental conditioning. Many people get caught up in the trap of seeing someone else with amazing or world class abilities and taking this as a sign that they are just not any good at their activity; the reality is everyone started out unable to do everything, everyone had to learn how to walk, how to talk, and how to run - so if one person can do an amazing thing, that by definition means others can, too - you may have to put forth a lot of effort to equal it, but by definition it is totally possible. The only real trick is doing the work needed and the only real trick to that is keeping your mental state totally positive. Dwell only on that which gives you energy - and with that in mind, here are the steps to take for a complete, powerful and reliable mental condition suitable to allow you to do, well, anything! The whole process of mental conditioning can be done in 15 minutes, and in basically 3 parts so, without further adieu, here are the 3 steps for a thorough mental conditioning in 15 minutes...

Step 1:

Before you start any task or work-out or rehearsal the first thing to do, even before starting the basic warm-up exercises, is to take 5 minutes and tend to where your mind is. No doubt it is attached to something or somewhere in the world whether it is school or kids or work or even genuinely serious things like an ill family member or grief stricken friend. Whatever it is that has hold of your mind, when it comes time to do your class or rehearsal or exercise, the first thing to do is to stop doing everything mentally, disengage, and sense just where your mind is. Are you basically up now and in a positive mood? Are you depressed or agitated by a serious situation? Are you feeling guilty at the notion of turning your mind away from that grief stricken friend or ill family member? Don't be! 'How can you say this?' is no doubt your response and the answer is, coming from repeated personal experience, the only thing that happens if you stop tending to your own mental state and then stop keeping yourself fit and well is that you will stop being fit and well - the other whom you quite rightly are concerned about will not get any worse nor any better if you compromise your health; chances are they really don't want you to do this either. The only way the healthy stay healthy is by doing healthy things. Do you stop tending to them then? Absolutely not - but at the same time, you simply cannot stop tending to your self either. As someone who has experienced the deaths of loved ones and friends I can tell you it is perfectly OK to develop the ability to totally shift gears or compartmentalize the 'you' that needs to keep up it's positive mental state, needs to continue making technical progress, needs to continue enhancing mind-body conditioning so that your progress and goals do not suffer. It is OK to allow yourself to forget about everything else out there and detach your mind for the time it takes to tend to your self. Some people find that saying a quiet prayer or reading Sacred Writings can really assist with the process of putting down all your worldly concerns and bringing the mind to a central, healthy focus.

Step 2:

And this is where it gets personal - what psyches you up? Metallica? YouTube videos of amazing dancers doing insane technique? Jedi battles? Whatever media or music or literature - what ever it is that can, on a very regular basis, get your mental state energized and get your mind in a state where it is ready to go for it, get after it, and focus on the enjoyment of the work you do, that is what you need to do next for about 5 minutes (or however long the shortest Metallica song is!) Jam out on the iPod, watch the video of Ivan Vasiliev doing triple tours en l'air, read the battle of the Black Gate in Lord of the Rings, whatever. There is no right way to do this, but the result is always the same - you want to get your mind fired up, ready to tear into your task and completely positive, confident, and ready to compete against anyone whether that really fast swimmer in lane 4 or that ultimate of competitors, yourself. Note, if you do not have anything that gets your mental state energized, if you have not yet discovered this, you have some homework to do! I recommend starting first with music because chances are some artist out there makes melodies that will make you want to move; and usually exciting action videos of real people doing awesome things such as extreme skiing videos or taking a Bugatti Veyron S to 267 MPH will do a fine job of fully distracting and then energizing your mind.

Step 3:

Once you are fully positive and revved up - and you will know it when you are because you can very nearly break into a sweat when the mind is fully psyched up and at 100% preparation - then the final step in mentally conditioning yourself to be at full throttle and complete enjoyment before commencing the work of that big rehearsal or killer new work out is to visualize yourself from the standpoint of victory and success, whether nailing all those big saut de basques or keeping your pace ahead of that guy in lane 4 and not overusing those triceps, how you will complete your event. This part is a real game-changer because with regular visualization of success or victory while doing a particular sequence or task, the mind has been shown to build very nearly the same pathways that actual physical effort does only the result is profoundly different: the "pre-built" pathways that mental conditioning and visualization create cause a proto-pathway that is much quicker to respond to the real efforts of actually doing the activity, the result being a markedly shorter time to instill the muscle memory all athletes, dancers, jockeys, etc., want to have and what is more, a positive mental state is associated with those pathways which means that when actually competing or dancing or riding, it becomes much harder for any random occurrence or upset to disturb this conditioned mental state. This makes you a highly successful person and also greatly enhances your enjoyment of your work and gives you a much more enhanced ability to handle what life will throw at you and still maintain a healthy, positive state of mind.

And now, without any hesitation or pause or distraction, after spending time on step 3 visualizing the success, jump in and get right after it, you are now ready to build on the success you just prepared yourself for.
