I can't help but to swallow my pride after reading an article by a Google Analytic since that was how I track my success on my Internet business. I am sure you are as well if you are man enough to admit it!

To Avinash Kaushik, analytics evangelist at Google, HITS is an acronym, which stands for "How Idiots Track Success." Are you feeling the heat?

In his article, he is sharing that "Clicks Don't Equal Success, Bounce-Rate Does." We are often asked "how many Hits are you getting on your website" instead of "what is the bounce rate."

Hits to your website are being tracked by the software on the server of your web hosting account. Simply log into the Cpanel and it can be seen by clicking on the Awstat icon. Almost every other day, I will diligently check the statistic of the hits rate to my blog without fail.

Unfortunately it is no longer an accurate gauge to the success of my blog. Instead of measuring hits to your website, you should be measuring the bounce rate. What does a high bounce rate tell you? I quote and unquote my friend Avinash Kaushik:

"I came, I puked, I left"

Bounce rate is the measure of time duration a visitor stay on your website. You can have 1000 hits to your website but when they came, they left almost immediately. Do you think you have a chance to sell them anything?

The reason your visitors came and left is because there is NOTHING to offer! Can you recall how many of these websites still exist? Instead of building quality content, many choose to copy and paste article from article directories!

We are over sold that "Hits = Sales". Having lots of hits to a web page are equivalent to getting your product shown. This is a logical marketing sales talk and after today, I hope it will change your opinion whenever somebody brags about the number of hits his/her website is getting!
