Long tail keyword phrases should ideally be chosen based on the amount of search competition and relevance to the article marketers offer.

As a general rule of thumb a bum marketer should not write articles for search results for a phrase with larger than 10,000 results. You'll also want to make sure that article competition for that phrase is low and that there are few similar articles listed on the first page.

Once you do find a phrase to write an article for you'll want to optimize it to that particular search. This can be done by repeating the phrase your optimizing for in the article headline. You'll also want to repeat the phrase in the article body and in the keywords section. Make sure you do not do what is called keyword stuffing which is sacrificing the quality of the article just to have a higher keyword density. This is considered a form of blackhat SEO .
